Got back from Thailand and Laos last Saturday. We had a blast! Making plans to go back as soon as possible. First thing, we had a nice and lovely flight to Khon Kaen via Thai Smile. We stayed at the SF Biz Hotel, rather flash modern hotel with a chicken and egg theme (it was formerly a chicken farm). Can’t remember what we had for dinner but we had drinks on a street with a few farang bars. Met a few locals and expats and knocked a few Singhas. A nice intro to Isaan.
During the afternoon, we took a taxi out to Kok Sa Nga King Cobra Village. This was what I was waiting for months to see! And it did not disappoint. The audience was mainly Thai school students, ranging from 5th grade to 9th grade or so. The locals have been raising and training snakes for generations and started putting on shows for tourists. It is a bit out of the way for most Westerners, but I am a diehard Thai-phile and we were passing through en route to Laos.
After a simple dance routine with the ladies carrying snakes, the real show began. Several men laid out cobras and pythons (?) and teased the snakes into attacking them. The men batted at the snakes and pulled them by their tails to get them angry and agitated. (Not sure if that is such a great move, but it was entertaining.)
The men let the snakes move towards the audience and most of the schoolgirls screamed and climbed the bleachers trying to escape. The men grabbed the cobras at the last second and all was well.
After the show, they brought out a few snakes and we took pics with them around our necks. This was as terrifying as it looks!
PS-Shot 20 seconds of the snake show. Here you go!
